Tips for happy periods

You may think that having a happy period is either luck or by having good genes.

But what you may not know you can have a happy and smooth periods too without the luck or what your genetics look like. And you can achieve it with what you do and what you eat during your whole cycle.

Hormones need support. They are constantly in flux, trying to work for you, based on the environment in which you place yourself.

To have hormones that are balanced, there are other factors to take into consideration, like your blood sugar levels, the health of your gut and absorption of nutrients, the functioning of your liver, how you manage your stress levels… because all those, if imbalanced or in dysfunction will lead to inflammation that leads to hormone imbalance, harsh pms, and painful periods.

It may sound like you have to “fix” all these other systems and it’ll take so long before you get your menstrual cycle smoother and more balanced. But it doesn’t have to be. With consistent healthy food and lifestyle habits, everything can change.

Here are some practical tips to start today.

Eat mainly plant-based. Your gut loves fiber because it eliminates estrogen out of your body. Lack of fiber can cause constipation, leading to toxic and hormone build up. Adding an extra serving daily can support this.

Limit Certain Substances: Reduce intake of caffeine, alcohol, and salty foods, especially in the week leading up to your period, as they can contribute to bloating and mood swings. Swap over to lightly caffeinated herbal tea like kukicha tea once you get to your luteal phase.

Create a wind down ritual. Support quality sleep with doing less in the evening is doing more for your body and hormonal fluctuations. Poor sleep can lead to a downward spiral of health choices as it can disrupt your appetite hormones, imbalance blood sugar levels, and lead to more caffeine and sugar consumption. The inflammatory cycle that loves to take over us. Shoot for 7-8 (or more if you need it!) hours of sleep. My favorite sleepy time tea? A strong cup of chamomile helps me sleep like a log.
